ESTA

ESTA

In order to enter the UK as a British citizen, you need a valid “ESTA” – this replaces the old ‘visa waiver’. Unless you have something like a US visa for some reason, everyone will need a valid ESTA before flying. Everyone is responisble for their own ESTA!

ESTA applications last for 2 years, so if you already have a ESTA, then please make sure it’s still valid for the duration of this trip!

If you do not have an ESTA, then you’ll need to apply for one. The application can be done online and is often processed within 24-48 hours. There is a small charge of $21 (US dollars) that you’ll also have to pay online.

If you need to apply for an ESTA, then only use the official US Homeland Security website here: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/

It is extremely important that you complete the ESTA application accurately and honestly as if it’s rejected, then you cannot travel. Additionally, it will be used by immigration control when you enter the US. If you do not have a valid ESTA, you will be refused entry at immigration control once you arrive in the US.

The application form can be a little confusing if you’ve never done it before, so I’ve linked to a video before that will talk you through the steps and how to answer the various questions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5s7EPLVHWRY&t=256s if the embedded video doesn’t work).

The application will ask you for the address of where you’re staying whilst you’re in the US – or “Point of Contact” – they only need to know where you are staying on your first night, so that is:

Address: Courtyard by Marriott, 3050 NE Stucki Ave, Hillsboro, OR 97124, United States

Phone: +1 503-690-1800

Once you’ve applied for your ESTA, please check back in a couple of days to check the status of it. Once it’s approved, that’s all you need to do. You do not need to print anything, everything is just held online for US immigration to access, you don’t need to present anything. However, some people feel more comfortable printing and carrying their approved application (but you honestly don’t have to!).

If you have any issues at all, or are unsure how to answer a question, then please save your application and contact Brian and he’ll help you.
